Coral Identification
About:
This is a short virtual reality (VR) experience for high school students that aims to provide an immersive environment for students to learn how to identify corals based on their shapes. This experience allows a fun environment for students to explore and investigate coral specimens up close.
Client: Samantha Bond, UIC BVIS
Software: Unity, Substance Painter, Zbrush, 3DSMax, Adobe Illustrator
Format: Exe application for Oculus Rift & Quest
Environment
The environment was designed to resemble a small coral reef where players are able to explore an environment that is usually not easily accessible. The color and lighting choices help create an intriguing yet calm environment for players to be in.
Assets
To ensure the accuracy of coral structures, models made out of 3D scans were obtained from the Smithsonian 3D Digitization collection and retopologized to reduce polycount for optimum performance in Unity. The models were then textured and painted in Substance Painter before being imported into Unity.
